23rd September 1953

Lord and Lady Brookeborough officially opened Kilkeel Intermediate School.
The first Principal of KHS was Mr. M. Macauley.

1955

The Dining Rooms and a kitchen were completed.

1955

A new pathway was built down to the School.  Cars still had to come from the Harbour Road.

1958

Room 42, formerly a Science Classroom was built.  This room is now a History Classroom.

1959

The first ‘A-Level’ courses were taught in KHS.

1961

KHS Girls’ Hockey Team was victorious in the Ulster Junior Cup.

1960

The Assembly Hall and Room 41 were built.
Rooms 1, 2 and 3 were also added.

1965

The very first “mobile” arrived.

1967

Kilkeel Intermediate School was renamed Kilkeel High School.

1968

Knockchree Avenue was extended past the school.

1970/1

The two woodwork rooms and a Biology Lab were built.

1971

Mr. Macauley retired as Principal  of KHS after 28 years.

Mr. R. Anderson became the new Principal.

1st October 1972

Mr. W.D. Cunningham joined the staff of Kilkeel High School.

1972

The School got a new car park and driveway from Knockchree Avenue

1972 (to present)

The first ‘London Experience’ for Third Form. 

In 1972 the trip cost £30!!

September 1973 

The first edition of the school news sheet KRONIK was published.

March 1973

The performance of the school’s first Musical. 

‘HMS – Pinafore’

 

1975

Rev. D.J. McGaughey was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Governors.

1977
 

The first ‘Mourne Park Experience’ for pupils in First Year. 

1977 – 2000

18th February 1982

Football Legend George Best visited the school.

1986

A new extension provided the school with new Art, Maths, Science, and Music classrooms, as well as, a Careers suite, Sixth-Form Centre, Lecture Theatre and new Staff Room.

1986

The death of Mr. R. Copeland.

1987

Mr. Anderson retired. 
Mr. H. Irvine replaced him as the new Principal.

1988

Ms. Violet McBride played hockey for Great Britain at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

1993

Kilkeel High School’s 40th Anniversary.

1993

Mr. Irvine retired as the Principal of KHS. 
Mr. W.D. Cunningham became the new Principal.   

1994

The first edition of the school magazine – ‘The Chronicle’ was published.

October 1994

A fire destroyed several classrooms, the Staff Room, and the General Office.

1998

The Under 13 Boys’ Hockey Team was victorious in the Bannister Bowl.

2000

Another marvellous win for the Under 13 Boys’ Hockey Team in the Bannister Bowl.

2002

An extension provided new Science and Maths classrooms.

2003

Kilkeel High School’s 50th Anniversary.
