The foreign language assistant

This person is a valuable language resource, employed for seven hours a week. Three schools share the assistant and rotate the task of employing him. He is used in two main ways:

a) in conversation classes with pupils from Year 12 (GCSE) and L6 and U6. These classes are compulsory.

b) as a team teacher. This has proved valuable since it exposes pupils to a native speaker, allowing them to hear French used as a natural means of communication.

We support the use of an assistant for several reasons:
a) it is supported by both Inspectorate and advisers

b) pupils who may never visit France can converse with native speakers

c) this is a valuable link with Europe

d) the assistant may record tapes and have access to other resources which are unavailable to us

e) the assistant aids the teacher’s linguistic competence

f) the assistant has an up-to-date knowledge of language and culture

g) access to an assistant allows for small group language classes

h) we need to employ assistants if we are to continue to send students to work as assistants in France .
