Pastoral Care within Kilkeel High School is seen as a medium through which relationships are created, maintained and developed.

Relationships encompass all the areas where staff and students interact, both within their own groups and between groups.

It is only through strong relationships that staff and students learn from each other to the benefit of all.

Context

Kilkeel High School is a mixed, medium-sized, 11-18, all-ability (comprehensive) school within a small-town, large-rural catchments area.  Since 1989, when the school introduced a Pastoral Care approach, the emphasis in pupil management has been on the continued development of a positive ethos, with a view to on-going improvement in the quality of teaching and learning.  Pastoral Care touches all aspects of the school and because of this unique quality, is recognised as the accepted medium of creating maintaining and developing good, appropriate relationships, where teacher-teacher, teacher-pupil or pupil-pupil.

Organisation

Pastoral Care in KHS is formally organised on the basis if Form classes and Year Groups.  Each pupil is assigned to a form with a Form Tutor, who has a primary responsibility for overseeing their care and behaviour, in all its aspects.  Year Heads are expected to have a close knowledge of all the pupils in their Year and to be available for referral where a Form Tutor considers it necessary.  Key Stage co-ordinators provide support and guidance for Year Heads over a number of Years.  The VP i/c Pastoral Care has the responsibility for seeing that the system functions properly and, apart from the Principal is the last stage of referral.  At all rungs of the ladder the opportunity exists to offer pupils counselling and guidance regarding their approach to school, as well as checking inappropriate behaviour.
