The English Department is one of the largest  departments in the school, with, at present, 32 different classes from Year 8 to Upper Sixth. There are six teachers in the department, five of whom teach a full English timetable ( usually six classes each).

Our aim is to support the school curriculum by providing a course in English which ensures that every pupil receives a broad, balanced and coherent education and acquires the knowledge, skills, understanding and competences necessary to meet the responsibilities of adult life and employment.

We want:

-         to enable students to use English in its spoken and written forms and to formulate and communicate thoughts in speech and writing, with a care for content, appropriateness and accuracy;

-         to encourage students to understand and respond imaginatively and sensitively to what they hear, read and experience in a variety of media;

-         to develop the ability of students to engage with, respond to and enjoy poetry, prose and drama;

-         to assist students to explore the cultures and experiences of their own and other societies, leading to emotional and intellectual growth;

-         to promote an understanding of a variety of resources, including ICT, as a means of communication and information handling;

-         to lay the foundations which will equip our students to take their place in adult life;

-         to maintain an atmosphere and an environment in which all this can be nurtured.
