The following units will be studied at AS level.

Unit 1         Investigating Business                               (Portfolio)
Unit 2         People in Business                                    (Portfolio)
Unit 3         Financial Planning and Monitoring          (External Exam)

This course provides candidates with a broad introduction to the business sector and should encourage candidates to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in realistic business contexts.  It gives them an opportunity to focus on a specific pathway eg Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Administration.

The qualification allows for a number of progression routes:

Higher Education

The Advanced award provides a sound basis for progression to a range of HE courses, eg BA degrees in business subjects and HNDs.

Employment

The Advanced award aims to maintain and support the recognised standards demanded for Applied Business education and training in order to meet the requirements of various business sectors.

Unit 1 – Investigating Business

In this portfolio assessed unit, you will explore the aims and objectives of businesses, the needs of customers and how these are met through the use of the marketing mix.  You will investigate how business deals with competition from other businesses and how external factors, such as changing social values, can affect a business.  You will explore the meaning of enterprise and enterprising behaviour and why individuals and teams are vital to the success of a business.

Unit 2 – People in Business

In this portfolio assessed unit, you will study the roles and responsibilities of people in business and the qualities an employer looks for in its employees.  You will investigate training and development opportunities available to individuals and why motivation is vital in training staff.  This unit gives you the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge needed to carry out the activities associated with the recruitment department.

Unit 3 – Financial Planning and Monitoring

In this externally assessed unit, you will be tested on your ability to calculate business costs, revenues and hence profits and be required to know how managers use this information in decision making.  You will need to know the ways in which businesses plan their finances by, for example, drawing cash flow forecasts or budgets and how businesses use this data to monitor the performance of the organisation.
