Competition Work

During this school year K.H.S was invited to participate in the Peace II Education Programme. The initiative run by Board Gascaigh Mhana and Northern Ireland Seafood was part of the EU programme for peace and reconciliation.

“Seafood and the Fishing Industry” was the theme for the programme in which 10 schools from Ireland, North and South, participated.

Our school was teamed up with Lagan College in Belfast. We met them when our project began with a field trip to Exploris. We had a great day there visiting Exploris and the CMAR Marine laboratory.

Miss Ellis from Lagan College and Mrs McBride, my Home Economics teacher, decided the framework of the competition. Lagan College researched four areas namely  “Survey work on food consumption”, “The seafood industry”, “Strangford Lough and the Marine Laboratory” and “Fish Dishes”.

Our four areas of study included “Biodegradation”, “The value of fish in the diet”, “The fishing industry in Kilkeel” and “The classification of fish”.

Throughout this project our class worked together very hard producing some excellent project work, poster work and other unusual displays as well as a Power Point presentation. The overall display was excellent (so Mrs McBride thought) – but would we win?

Representatives from each school were nominated to present the final project at the Manor House Hotel, Enniskillen. Claire and I were lucky to be chosen and we had an enjoyable experience at the Manor House.

The day of judging finally arrived; after all our hard work, we were glad to be at this stage. There were 4 judges, who all spent ages chatting and quizzing us on our work.

The winners were announced. WE WON. We were thrilled. As winners we were presented with a beautiful silver platter, plus a plaque as well as a certificate along with £1000 for the Home Economics department. We were each given framed certificates as well as a money voucher.

Our winning project is now on display at Exploris in Portaferry. So if you visit Portaferry you will be able to look at our finished display. We can recommend some interesting reading to you.

Our class thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience from the day trip to Portaferry where the project was launched, the hard work that the whole class got involved in right through to our trip to Maud’s Ice Cream shop to celebrate our success.

The programme was aimed to encourage awareness of the seafood/fishing industry and to promote seafood consumption amongst 13-14 year olds. We hope it will.

Young Cook of the Year
Students at KS3 and KS4 level are given the opportunity to enter various cookery competitions organised by different food manufacturers, councils and catering establishments. To date we have been very successful in the annual Dairy Council Cookery Competition. A former pupil namely Emma Spence actually won the title “Young Cook of the Year”.

Many other students have also been successful in this competition winning valuable equipment for the Home Economics department.
