Courses Offered

An understanding of the subject area will increase knowledge and understanding of human needs. At each key stage the course offered is designed to encourage pupils to think critically, make informed choices and manage resources so that they are able to lead effective lives as individuals and family members as well as members of the wider community.

At KS3 level all pupils are given the opportunity to study Home Economics in Years 8, 9 and 10.

  • At KS4 level pupils select Home Economics as a G.C.S.E subject if they wish.
  • At KS4 level pupils select Child Development as a G.C.S.E subject if they wish.
    • Child Development involves students in the study of the physical, social, emotional, intellectual development of children from conception to 5 years.
    • The course develops knowledge and understanding of pregnancy, the needs of young children, the roles and responsibilities of parents and the social and environmental influences that affect family life.

Lower 6th pupils have the opportunity to study A/S level Home Economics if they wish. This is a one year course offering three modules of study, namely principles of nutrition, diet and health and health and lifestyle.

In Module one students study macro and micro nutrients and other dietary constituents. Digestion and nutrients as well as the role of energy in the body are also studied.

In module two the study of interrelationships between diet and health throughout life is required.

Recommendations for all groups and people as well as other dietary theories are investigated.

Module three requires the study of the positive state of wellbeing. Physical, social, intellectual and emotional dimensions of individuals are also studied.

Upper sixth pupils have the opportunity to complete a course on survival cookery if they wish.

Some topics addressed at this stage include:

  • Budgeting
  • Money sharing ideas for student life
  • Planning, cooking and serving food suitable for students
  • Nutritional aspects regarding a healthy diet for student life are also explored.
  • Students are given the opportunity to make informed choices RE: Up to date equipment that they se during this course.
  • Tips, short cuts and money saving ideas are explored during the practical activities.
