SELB Exchange 2

Lindsay and Rachael's Mad trip to France

In 2003, Lindsay Maybin and Rachael Trimble, both of whom were studying AS French went to Tours as part of the annual S.E.L.B pupil exchange. Earlier in the year they had hosted two French Students and in March they set off to spend ten days with their respective French Families. This is their account of their French adventure:

We stepped off a plane in sunny Paris and were greeted with ‘Bienvenue’ – not to mention the whole kissing thing which we found a bit strange at first, but soon got used to!

During our time we spent four days in a Primary School. This was probably the best part of our time in France. The teachers made us speak in English to the pupils and correct the pupils’ pronunciation.

We always had a two-hour lunch break but while at the Primary school we seemed to spend at least one of those hours playing ‘The farmer wants a Wife’ with the children.

On Wednesday we went on a trip with the other Northern Irish exchange students. It was great being able to talk in English again. We visited two historic towns, Amboise and Loches, some chateaux and the Leonardo da Vinci museum.

On our last day in France we went to school with our exchange pupils. This was quite an experience! The teachers are not very strict and seem much more laid back than in our school. We went along to their double period of P.E when they spent two hours running around a track – not exactly our idea of fun!

Overall, our French experience was great. We stayed with lovely host families and got on well with our exchange partners. We would recommend this trip to all pupils doing French AS next year. It gives you an insight into a different way of life and you might learn some French as well.
