6th Form Activities

Sixth formers are involved in many activities throughout the school year ; these are just a selection:

In September, some of our L6 and U6 students spent two days in Corpus Christi College in Cambridge on an “open day” residential visit . They saw round the various colleges, met with students and tutors and attended a lecture on the application process.

Each KS3 form class is “adopted” by a small group of three or four Upper Sixth students who spend Tuesday morning registration with “their” class, getting to know them, organising quizzes and games and building supportive relationships.

In October, the annual “Jeans For Genes” day organised by sixth form raised the total of  £900 for research charities.

In November the Head Boy and Head Girl, aided by their deputies, organise the Prefects’ Disco. This year the fancy dress theme was cartoon characters.

Also in November, K.H.S. was represented at the RSPB competition when three sixth formers, Rachael Bleakley, Leonora Hanna and Mike Hardy had their essays accepted for the final shortlist. While they did not win, they had a marvellous day at UTV where they learned presentation skills and were highly commended by the presenter John Barwise.

In December sixth form always help to organise the Christmas parties for KS3 and KS4.

In January, Leonora Hanna was awarded the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Award.

Leonora was chosen for the Award because of her inspirational qualities demonstrated through her commitment and work in the field of practical citizenship within the school community, particularly in the category “selfless service to others”. Throughout her school career she has shown commitment, support, kindness and, above all, genuine friendship to the school community and, especially, to her peers.

Staff and students at Kilkeel High School are very proud of Leonora and congratulate her on this magnificent achievement.

The sixth form “A” level English students  produce the school news sheet, “Kronik”, now in its thirty second year. The photograph shows the girls just about to sell their “Valentine” issue of the “Kronik” which contained: Lovelines, competitions, the “most eligible” bachelors and bachelorettes, jokes and the ever- popular problem page “Dear Uncle Norm”!

In March, 22 members of L6 went on the annual London trip along with Year 10. Their activities included: a visit to Docklands, standing on the Greenwich Meridian, “The Lion King”, Tate Modern art gallery, the wedding dress of Queen Maud of Norway and a great deal of shopping!

In April, some of our past pupils returned to talk to the present sixth form about their experiences at university and college. Students from universities in N.Ireland and “across the water” discussed: choosing courses, gap years, living in halls of accommodation versus sharing a house, coping with the workload and cooking for yourself versus living on Pot Noodles!

In May Upper Sixth have their Farewell Dinner and disco in the Aylesforte House Hotel. By tradition, they perform a sketch and specially written songs as a “Thank you” for their teachers after the meal. This year it was also the occasion of the presentation of their first American-style yearbook, the result of a great deal of hard work and organisation by Stephen Mc Cullough and .Lindsey Murdock.

Form trips occur throughout the year; this year sixth form chose to go  karting, ice-skating, bowling and shopping.
