The English Department in the News

Class 10.3  made the front page of the “Mourne Observer”  when they wrote letters to the editor to express their dissatisfaction with certain local issues. The letters caught the attention of the Mayor, Henry Reilly, who invited 10.3 to the Council chamber in Newry where their questions were answered by councillors and the Mayor himself.

The English Department was thrilled when 361 of  its  pupils received certificates to say their poems had been accepted for publication  in the anthology  “Great Minds from Co. Down” published by “Young Writers”. 280 pupils gave permission for their poems to appear in the book.

Two sixth form girls, Rachael Bleakley and Leonora Hanna, contacted their local paper “The Outlook” to offer their services over the summer of 2004; their articles appeared regularly on such varied topics as anti-smoking measures and male film stars!

Earlier in the year, the entire school had taken part in our annual poetry competition in October. The winning poem was by Daniel Smith of Upper Sixth, who  received the Irvine Poetry Cup on Prize Night. Daniel’s poem is reproduced below.

IN SWEET DECLINE

I thought you’d always be there
No matter what you’d say
But now wraiths emasculate
And emaciate the sea.

Feathers gather in my hands
Like cherry blossom dreams.
I want to read you like a book
And tear you at the seams.

 Your skin is alabaster,
Your lips speak of sanguine floods.
But now my tears flow in crimson,
Weeping bitter blood.

Stars shine lifeless
Up above.
Necromantic testaments
To our failed and rotting love.

Daniel Smith ,Upper Sixth.
