Key Stage 4

The GCSE Language exam will be sat by all KS4 pupils , except those who have not reached level 3 in the KS3 tests, who will sit Entry Level English. We will follow the CEA syllabus for both exams.

During the GCSE Language two year course pupils will study:

FOR THE EXAM ( 60%) :

  • literary comprehensions

  • discursive essays

  • non-literary comprehensions

  • real-life writing tasks

FOR THE WRITTEN COURSEWORK (20% ):

  • a Shakespeare essay

  • a poetry essay where poems are compared

  • a discursive essay

  • a creative/imaginative essay.

FOR THE TALKING AND LISTENING COURSEWORK (20%):

  • an individual speech, with some questions from the audience

  • a group discussion

  • as  a character from a text, the pupil delivers a speech to the class or performs in a sketch s/he has written, based on the themes in the drama text studied.

The GCSE Literature exam will be sat by the top three streams in KS4. We will follow the CEA syllabus. During the GCSE Literature two year course pupils will study:

FOR THE EXAM ( 70%) :

PROSE:

Lord of the Flies  by William Golding

DRAMA:

Our Town by Thornton Wilder

POETRY:

The CEA poetry anthology 1 ( 15 poems from pre-1914 )

FOR THE WRITTEN COURSEWORK (30% ):

  • a Shakespeare essay (the same one as in the Language coursework folder)

  • a poetry essay ( the same one as in the Language coursework folder)

  • An essay on a nineteenth century novel.

Tiers of entry at GCSE:

Foundation Tier – all grades, up to and including grade C.

Higher Tier – all grades, up to and including A*

The final decision will be taken after the January mock exams in Year 12, by teachers and pupils, in consultation. Selection for the appropriate tier will take into account the pupil’s performance in coursework, the mock exam, and past exam questions as well as his/her attitude and effort.
