Outside Visits

The Department currently organises trips to:

  • the theatre ( L6 recently saw “The Glass Menagerie” at the Lyric theatre as a way of  increasing their understanding of Tennessee Williams’ stage directions in their exam text “A Streetcar Named Desire”

  • lecture days at Jordanstown for Lower and Upper Sixth ( on Chaucer and “King Lear”)

  • Stratford-upon-Avon ( where we saw “King Lear”, “Hamlet” and “Romeo and Juliet” )

Above - The Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the River Avon.

Above - Shakespeare gives his blessing to the “A” level
scholars from K.H.S. !

Above - We act out the duel between Hamlet and Laertes ( with plastic retractable daggers!)

Above - Ophelia is buried ( in the orchard of Anne Hathaway’s cottage)

Above - We meet the REAL Hamlet after the performance! Toby Stephens later wrote to the girls to thank them for their ( very positive!) theatre review.

Above - On the last day, the group pose on the mediaeval Clopton bridge.

  • public speaking competitions ( Our Year 12 team competed in the Belfast final of the Business and Professional Women’s competition. We have participated in this competition for many years; this is the third time we have reached the N.I. final)

The U6 team spoke on the topic “Dying For A Fag?” at the Newcastle heat.

The L6 team won the Newcastle heat with a thought-provoking talk entitled “Lost Childhoods? The Lolita Syndrome”.

The L6 girls went through to the Belfast final where they acquitted themselves with honour.

  • quizzes (Miss Roddy is in charge of all quizzes in school)
